Why I will continue to teach internationally until I retire!

American teacher, Susan Eby has been teaching overseas since 1994 and doesn’t plan to stop until she retires. She’s now teaching IB Maths at Somersfield Academy in Bermuda and says she’s expanding her teaching skills everywhere she goes. “Here in Bermuda I have developed my skills teaching the IB’s Middle Years Program (MYP),” she says.

Having been an IB Diploma Program (IBDP) teacher in her previous jobs, Susan says the experience of moving to the IB’s curriculum for 11-16 year old students has helped her to see how the skills that students develop with the MYP prepare them well for their IBDP learning.  “From this experience, I have gained the wonderful feeling of being valued as an educator,” she says.

Enjoying life as a teacher

Susan is loving life in Bermuda. “It’s a beautiful island with warm, friendly and polite people,” she says. “The weather is amazing, as is the landscape with its gorgeous pink sand beaches. I’m enjoying being a part of a tranquil island culture.”

Susan admits that living and teaching overseas can have its challenges but believes these can be overcome with the right mindset. “No matter where you are, place conditions of worth on the culture you are living in, and make the most of new experiences, then challenges diminish,” she explains.

Susan considers teaching internationally has been the best decision for her. “Living and working in a new culture opens doors that no vacation can,” she says. Her next stop is Cairo in Egypt and it doesn’t sound like it will be her last teaching job overseas: “I will continue to teach internationally until I retire,” she adds.
